I have had a continuous migraine for 10 days now. Nothing is helping. I have been to my family doctor, urgent care and the emergency room (twice) for this migraine. All they do is pump me full of medication that does not work. I've tried Imitrex, oxycodone, Dilaudid, magnesium drip, ice & heat to the back of my neck and still no relief. Any ideas? Wendy.
When this happens, some people get good results with a tapering steroid pack, such as the Medrol DosePack. This is a course of steroids that starts at a high dose on the first day with the dose going to each day until it's finished. There are also other IV infusion treatments that can be helpful. For more information on these treatments, take a look at IV Treatment of Refractory Migraines.
Emergency rooms and urgent care centers aren't good options for Migraine. They're loud and bright, and the doctors there tend to be general practice doctors or trauma specialists.
At this point, another call to your family doctor and a search for an actual Migraine and headache specialist are your best options. Call your family doctor and ask if he or she can do anything more for you. It will probably be a bit of a wait to get in to see a Migraine specialist, but people who have Migraines that go on like this do best under specialist care. It’s important to note that neurologists aren’t necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check the Find a Health Care Specialist on the ACHE web site and the listing of certified specialists on the Migraine Research Foundation site.
