1/28/08 #10 - Why will doctor prescribe only 6 Axert per month?

Ask the Clinician Health Pro
  • Full Question:
    I suffer from migraines that cause crushing pain, throwing up and an almost "stupid" feeling. My doctor and I have found that Relpax works so well for me. My problem comes from the fact that she will only let me have six a month. That is not nearly enough to help me. I know that I am supposed to take Relpax as soon as I feel my aura pain, but if I do this I go through the six pills very fast. It is very upsetting to have something out there that keeps me from getting so sick but not being able to get it! Can you tell me why it might be that I can only get six a month? Thank you, Ronda.

    Answer:

    Dear Ronda;

    Only your doctor can tell you why she only prescribes six Axert tablets per month. There's no one reason; there are different possible reasons:

    • If your doctor knows your insurance company will only cover six tablets per month, that may be why she only writes the prescription for that many.
    • How frequent are your Migraines? Has your doctor mentioned preventives to you? Some doctor will prescribe only enough triptans for three or four Migraine attacks per month because it's considered healthier to prevent Migraines.

    These are possible reasons, but you'll have to ask your doctor to know why she prescribes as she does.
