I have had TM for over 9 months with no releif is this normal?
My neurologist has me on Topamax, nortriptyline, clonazepam, verapamil, tizanidine/Flexeril. I've even tried Imitrex. All of this for two months. I even tried steroids, and steroid blocker shots on both sides of my head. Nothing works. I have constant pain with a Migraine attack every 3 to 5 days. (No auras.) Now I've noticed that not only my eyelids are swelling, but a spot on my forehead and a spot under my right eye. Is pill popping my only alternative? Donna.
It can take up to three months to see results from the preventive medications you're taking. You mentioned that you've tried Imitrex. Are you taking anything for pain? If you're taking something for pain more than two or three days a week, that could be compounding the issue by causing medication overuse headache (MOH), aka rebound. If you're in a rebound cycle, preventives may not work. See Medication Overuse Headache - When the Remedy Backfires for more information on this. Studies have shown MOH to be a factor in 80% of transformed Migraine cases.
Sleep issues can also play a big part in transformed Migraine. How is your sleep quality, your sleep schedule? Take a look at Transformed Migraine Related to Sleep Problems. Tizanidine is often a good medication for people with sleep issues. You might want to discuss your dosage and the time you take it with your doctor.
It can be difficult to accept taking daily medications, Donna, but the bottom line is that Migraine is a genetic neurological disease, and some Migraineurs need daily medications to control the disease and protect their health. Neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine specialists. If you don't make progress with this neurologist, consider an actual Migraine specialist.
