Nocturnal headaches every night?

Ask the Clinician Health Guide August 23, 2008
  • Full Question:

    I have been getting nocturnal headaches for 2-3 weeks every night. Any suggestions? Ct was normal.

    I have been getting night time headaches for 2-3 weeks every night. I have a hard time falling back to sleep. Once I get up, it tends to go away after an hour or so, but then I am tired most of the day. My CT scan was normal and I do not have any other symptoms of migraine. Neurologist wants to put me on Topomax. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Helen.

    Answer:

    Dear Helen;

    Headaches at night or up on waking are more often than not associated with some type of sleep issue. Disrupted sleep, poor quality sleep, any such issue can be a headache trigger.

    To jump to a medication such as Topamax without a diagnosis or a hint of what's triggering your headaches seems a bit premature. Getting a second opinion, preferably from a headache specialist is in order. There's a link below to our directory of patient recommended specialists if you need assistance.

    Good luck,
