Hysterectomy as a cure for menstrually triggered Migraines?

Ask the Clinician Health Pro
  • Full Question:

    I have a history of migraine headache starting at the age of 12 and I am now 40. I feel that my headaches are related to my menstrual cycle. I have tried many drugs, exercise and diets. Has there been  research on hysterectomy as cure? Stephanie.

    Answer:

    Dear Stephanie;

    Don't do it! There is no "cure" for any type of Migraine. There are effective treatments, but no cure.

    Hormone fluctuations are a common Migraine trigger for women, but a hysterectomy is a huge gamble. It could make things better, make things worse, or make no difference at all. The same thing is true of oral contraceptives and other hormonal treatments.
