Guys in the community?

By Steve85 Wednesday, September 30, 2009

Hey everyone, again I am new to the site, but I have a question more about the online community here, not about the migraine community as a whole. Is there a decent percentage of men on this site that suffer from migraines? I know that migraines tend to predominantly affect females more than males but I've run into a lot of people in my life that don't quite understand that guys do have problems with migraines too. I was just seeing if there were other guys out there that feel the same way or have run into the same preconception in their journey with overcoming migraines. Let me know!

Follow up on my persistant headache...

My son, who is now 30, has been suffering with migraines since he was 5 or 6. It took a long time to finally get him diagnosed and a long process of fine tuning which meds worked the best for him. Right now he's on Imitrex 20 mg nasal spray. It is a LIFE SAVER!!! He takes his meds at the first sign of the aura and sometimes he never even suffers any headache. The only downside is this med is freakin expensive!!! At Sam's, 3 doses are $110. I did find a site in Canada where we can get 4 doses for $89.95 so that's what we've been doing lately. It has finally gone generic, but it takes awhile for other drug companies to start making it so the price will go down.

We spent YEARS with him in absolute agony before we finally got him diagnosed and on the right meds.

Hi, Steve! I hope you find and get responses from other men with migraine here.

Last year I published Migraine Expressions, a collection of art and literature about life with migraine from 125 people living it; and I was extremely pleased that several men responded and sent beautiful and insightful art and written pieces.

I've heard from some men and from women who love them that they don't seem to reach out or take advantage of support groups. Bottom line I learned while working on the book is that while men and women may experience different social issues, the pain and symptoms of migraine are universal and similar for all of us.

I'm sorry you have migraine and hope you are managing well!

Yes, I'm here, maybe not as active as others, but do read our connection newsletters!

hey Steve,

you're right, it seems that women are the predominant sufferers.  However, us men are indeed out there.  my migraines are absolutely brutal.  knock on wood, i haven't had one for a couple of months!  i think when one suffers a migraine, it's universal--regardless of whether you are male or female.

it would be great to hear from more men, though!

take care of yourself, buddy.

Hey there, Steve,

You're quite right that women with Migraine outnumber men by about three to one. So, that automatically means there will be fewer men in a community such as ours.

Unfortunately, studies have shown that men are also less likely to discuss health issues, both online and offline, so that's going to mean even fewer men. BUT, there are some here, and I'm glad to see that at least a couple have answered you.

Yup.  We're out here.  I know two others at the plant I work for.

If you'll check out the 2009 poetry entries there are poems from several guys.

I have had some folks surprised that a guy suffers from migraines but mostly I have to deal with people who don't understand that I can't just take a pill and be over it-OR-can't it be controlled by a pill... haven't found one that totally stops 'em yet.

You're not alone but we are certainly fewer in number.
