Q: Migraine sufferer undergoing chemo experiencing severe migraines between rounds

I am a frequent migraine sufferer undergoing chemo (Cisplatin & Etoposide) for testicular cancer.  5 days on, 2 weeks off times 4 cycles.  My premeds include 10mg of Decadron.  I get no migraines during treatment, but then 2 weeks straight of daily, unbearable migraines between treatments.  I need to take Maxalt every day which I know is undesireable.  I presume it's due to steroid withdrawal, but I could use suggestions on what I might do address this.  Thanks. Rob

Hi Rob!

First, are you sure it's a Migraine that you are getting? Between the Decadron and your abortive, you could be experiencing Medication Overuse Headache.

I'm sure you are aware, as you said in your question, that taking Maxalt every day is not a good idea. This can lead to MOH, as well as the steroid in your chemo, could very well be leading to this.

Have you talked to your doctor about this? I would bring this up and see what he/she thinks. Maybe give your neurologist or whomever treats you for Migraine a call and see if there is something that can be done to avoid this from happening.

Good luck! I wish you a quick recovery!!
