Q: Vitamins

I went yesterday and bought coenzyme Q10, B2 and magnsieum supplements. I did check with the DR last week just to make sure adding these was ok, but now I'm not sure how much to take. Any suggestions? The guy at the vitamin shop did tell me to take the magsieum at night if I have problems sleeping, thought this was a interesting tidbit to pass on.

Thanks Erica

Erica,

You need to call your doctor's office and confirm dosages with him, but I can tell you the most commonly used dosages.

Coenzyme Q10 should be the softgels or liquid; not tablets or capsules because it's less effective once it's been powdered. The most commonly used dosage for Migraine prevention is 300 mg per day.

On the vitamin B2, 400 mg is the usual dosage.

As for magnesium -- doctors' recommendations on this one vary widely from 500 mg per day to 1,500 mg per day. At the higher doses, it's usually taken in two or three dosed through the day to avoid diarrhea. People at vitamin shops can be helpful, but they're usually not medical professionals, so always check what they say with your doctor. Also, if you take much supplemental magnesium, it needs to be balanced with supplemental calcium, or it can cause problems.

So, there are some basics. Please check with your doctor on the right dosage for you.

Good luck,

Teri
