Q: I've been on birth control and prior to menstrual migraines. How can this be?

I've been on birth control, low dose estrogen, but not micro-low for 10 years. I'm hearing birth control should help my menstrual migraines, but not in my case. I have had extreme emotional stress over the last 3 years. My life is settling down, but I still get debilitating migraines. Why is this? What can I do to prevent these headaches since I am already on birth control? My diary shows headaches a few days before my period, sometimes afterward.

Hi Michelle,

Changes in hormones may play a role in Migraine attacks for some women. Unfortunately, the birth control pill is not a guarantee that your Migraine frequency or severity will be reduced.  Some women get relief, while others don't. Frova can be taken a few days before your period starts to help with menstrual Migraines. Click HERE for more information. You may want to talk with your doctor about that and see what he says.

Good luck

Nancy
