Q: a form of migraine with exact symptoms of a stroke but no diagnosis, can anyone help?

hi, since i was 12 I've had migraines with all the stroke symptoms such as loss of speech and speech recognition, basic actions such as using toilets and swallowing pills, confusion, not been able to recognize family members, no use of muscles in one side of my body, inability to walk and violent aggression which is the opposite of my personality! Ive been to ER many times for the past 4 years and even though Ive had tests such as CT scans and lumbar punctures the doctor hasnt given me a diagnosis other than its a migraine. if anyone else has any of these symtos or any idea what it may be it would be a great help, thanks!

Charliepc,

It really is important that you get an accurate diagnosis of what type of Migraine you have. It can make a difference in which treatments are appropriate for you. From your saying "no use of muscles in one side of my body," hemiplegic Migraines would be suspect. For more information on that form of Migraine, see Hemiplegic Migraine - The Basics.

You mention ER trips. Have you consulted your own doctor? If your doctor isn’t able to help you, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It’s important to note that neurologists aren’t necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

Please keep me posted on what you find out?

Welcome again,

Teri

After 56 years worth of migraines, I have just found out something which may help you too. I hope many migraine sufferers read this information. I am a nurse and have suffered horrendous migraines since the age of 8. As they have progressed over the past 30 years or so, I have developed many stroke-like symptoms and visual disturbances and then after about 20 minutes, the headache begins. Just recently I realized that for the past several years, there has been an increase in my confusion, an increase in short term memory loss, extreme dizziness and always having some degree of headache each day (maybe 10-15% pressure) and oh....have had a larger reactive pupil on the right.

Doctor sent me for an MRI last week and it turns out that I have substantial ischemic areas on the brain, in other words I've been having mini strokes.

Upon researching after appt., there are such things as "migraine strokes." I found this site by looking for "migraine headaches versus strokes." My damage to the brain is not recoverable and now I am going for all other kinds of tests for the brain and circulatory. How in the world did I and other migraine sufferers not ever hear of a migraine stroke before? Could it be because we have never been truly believed or taken seriously?;  or is it that the health profession does not care enough about migraine sufferers?

27% of strokes under the age of 45 are from migraine strokes!! Beware it is not, "JUST A MIGRAINE!".......edie
