Can migraine treatments cause rebounds even though on preventative meds?

My GP started me on Topamax for migraines that I have been having daily for over a month. I was concerned re: using too much Midrin/Maxalt for treatment of the daily migraines due to risk of rebound migraines. She told me to use these meds to treat the migraines aggressively with the hope that the Topamax will prevent them. Since then the migraines have woresened in intensity so I was wondering if this is rebounding because I am taking Midrin or Maxalt everyday even though the Topamax is supposed to prevent this?

My first real experience with chronic head pain...

Hi susan 212,

Taking Midrin/Maxalt everyday will not prevent Migraines. In fact taking these medications more than two to three days a week may indeed give you rebound headache, now called medication overuse headache (MOH.) More importantly, while you have MOH, no preventive medication on earth will work to prevent your Migraines. Continue reading more on Medication overuse headache: When the Remedy Backfires.  Our article on transformed Migraine is important to read also because we now have more evidence that certain medications - even NSAIDS - put us at an increased risk for this type of Migraine.
