Q: Headache relief after a small nose bleed

I have had a moderate to severe headache off and on for more than 4 months.  (It rollercoasters from a constant 3-4 (on a scale of 10) to 8-9 and truly incapacitating. I will have a headache build over the course of a week or so until I have a spontaneous nosebleed (usually while eating).  The nosebleed lasts only a minute or two.  Post-nosebleed, the headache is usually noticably less severe.  It seems like the nosebleeds act as a pressure relief valve.  Any ideas if there is a connection?

Wombatgirl,

Have you seen your doctor? Unexplained headache should always be checked out by your doctor.

I don't know of any headache disorder that causes the nose to bleed or would be relieved by it. High blood pressure could cause both headaches and nose bleeds.

How many days a week have you been taking medication to releive this headache? Taking Migraine abortive meds such as the triptans or ergotamines or any kind of pain med more than two or three days a week can make matters worse by causing medication overuse headache (MOH), aka rebound. See Medication Overuse Headache - When the Remedy Backfires for more information on this.

Please see your doctor? Nobody can tell you what's happening via the Internet.

If your doctor isn't able to help you, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

Good luck,

Teri
