Q: My affects on Fioricet

I recently was having sever headaches and tension, I never been to a doctor in 7 years and I hate pills ( I thought you could control your symtoms without them). I have been taking Fioricet for 1 week and I have already noticed a change in my everyday life. I have more engery, I sleep, eat, more productive at my work details, more talkative instead of being shy, my temper has incrediably decreased, I don't yell, I have more patience with loud noise (kids). I don't get frustrated or feel frustrated. The first thing my doctor said is not to get used to taking these pills, but I feel the medication has help my life so much even though it's only been a week. I feel my body is back on track. I feel that if I contiue taking this medication my health and life will continue to be this way and it is a great feeling. Can this medication be taking for this if this medication is improving myself and emotions? Can I ask my doctor to keep me on this medication? What are your thoughts?

Tanya,

Fioricet should not be used more than two or three days a week for a number of reasons.

Taking Migraine abortive meds such as triptans or any kind of pain medication such as Fioricet more than two days a week, a big part of your problem may well be medication overuse headache (MOH), aka rebound. See Medication Overuse Headache - When the Remedy Backfires for more information on this.

Fioricet contains butalbital, which is a barbiturate. Barbiturates are a type of depressant drug that causes relaxation and sleepiness. In relatively low doses, barbiturates and alcohol have very similar clinical syndromes of intoxication. Barbiturates have the potential for dependence. You can read more about barbiturates HERE.

Also, when such medications are taken for a long period of time, it eventually takes more and more of the medication to get the same effects.

If you need a medication for Migraine prevention or an antidepressant for depression, there are many medications that are better for those purposes.
