Q: Hi, I've been suffering Headaches on and off for years now. They were diagnosed by my dr as tension headaches.

But recently they are more severe, and not like tension headache, they are all over head?

The pain could start any time of the day, usually morning, so I try to hit it fast with paracetamol which doesn't always work. The headaches if I do not catch them in time, generally last all day, and I need to sleep them off. Yesterday was the worst in a long time, It started at 8am, I took 2 paracetamol, but they wore off after an hour, at 12 pm took 2 more paracetamol by which time no effect, and by 3pm I was physically sick from the pain, felt like motion sickness, nausea, constant throbbing which started at my forehead, than went to top of left side of head and then the back of my head..By the end of day my whole head hurt, I could not listen to music as that irritated me and needed to get to a dark room to sleep. I did eventually sleep from 5pm, and awoke at 9am this morning, still feeling a little groggy but overall headache has worn off, although a few jabs here and there... I do wear glasses for reading, on the computer and long distance driving, as I am slightly short sighted in one eye, and slightly long sighted in the other. I am wondering if it is either I need to wear my glasses more frequently, or that it is more Migraine Headache than Tension Headache or perhaps a Sinus problem?? Thanks

Nikita,

-:¦:-•:*'""*:•.-:¦:-•*Welcome to MyMigraineConnection!*•-:¦:-•:*'""*:•.-:¦:-

Sinus headaches are rare unless you have a sinus infection. About 90% of what people think are sinus headaches are actually Migraines. For more on this, see Sinuses Giving You a Headache? It's Probably a Migraine.

The symptoms you describe - the nausea, sensitivity to sound, throbbing pain, need for a darkened room - are typical Migraine symptoms, but only a doctor can tell you if what you're experiencing is Migraine. Is there any history of Migraines, "sick headaches," or sinus headaches in your family? That information will be important to know and tell your doctor because Migraine is a genetic neurological disease.

If your doctor isn't able to help you, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

Please keep me posted on how you're doing?

Welcome again,

Teri

Hi Teri, Thank you for your quick reply. Its strange as my dad doesn't suffer migraines. From what I remember when my mum was alive, she didn't either. But I had been asking family members today, and my dad's sister said she started suffering when she was a child from migraine. Is it possible to jump generations or other family members?? I think I'll start keeping notes as to when, where, how long and symptoms, so I can take to my doctor and get re-diagnosed. Jo Smile

Hi, Jo,

You're very welcome. Yes, it seems that Migraine can "skip" a generation. I suspect that what really happens is that in some generations, the Migraines are so mild that they're never diagnosed.

Please keep me posted, and let me know if I can help you with any information. OK?

Teri
