Q: Recent start of debilitating migraines no diagnosis yet, help

My husband recently began getting migraines daily. Extreme episodes that leave him regressed into childhood or scared and confused with no memory at all. A 275 lb four year old that doesn't remember you is hard to deal with. These memory lapses can last for hours or even days. He is light sensitive and can't stand the quiet, yet some sounds are too much, ect ect. and the only thing VA has recommended is Ice packs. Three CT scans have revealed no abnomalities. VA has tests schedualed in the next few months. He is on Depacote and other anti deressants for TSDand has been for years. He can not stay in a mental facility because the problem is physical but it may take many months before the VA prescribes anything for these episodes. They seem to be brought on by walking, talking or the slightest disagreement with how he wants life to be. Can any one help? Any advice at all is appreciated

Hi spiritwoolf,

I bet those episodes are scary. Many times CT scans and other tests can come back normal because there is no "test" to diagnose Migraine disease. I'm not sure what type of doctor he is seeing but it sounds like he really needs to see an expert now. The thing that is very important to remember is that all neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

Think of it like this: when a pipe under the kitchen sink breaks, we call the expert - a plumber. We could call a handyman who can repair it, then fix the drain, the cabinets and paint the room if needed. But he isn't the expert we need for the broken pipe. Neurologists may be fine doctors, but aren't experts in any one area because they treat so many different conditions like MS, stroke, and epilepsy. A Migraine specialist is the expert who only treats one condition - ours -  Migraine and headache disorders.

We have some information about the four stages of a Migraine attack to start you off; Anatomy of a Migraine, but not everyone may get each phase. We also have some information on other types of Migraines you can take a look at HERE.

I hope this helps,

Nancy
