I've gained weight on Lyrica. Besides Topamax, is there anti-seizure med that does not cause gain?

I have had migraines since I was probably 15, but they were monthly...

Topamax gave me unpleasant side effects, including diarrhea, an out-of-body feeling and one of burning feet. I've taken Neurontin and had bad side effects, taken blood pressure and calcium channel blockers, taken some of the tricyclics. The doctor wants me also on Depakote ER, but weight gain is one of the side effects.

hi Susie, I have tried all of these as well.  I have not tried Lyrica, but was considering it!  I am glad that you posted about it.  I may think twice before taking it.

I have not tried one preventative that works!  Topomax probably did the most for me, but even after 4 years on it I was still getting side effects such as numb feet, sleepyness, that "out of it" feeling, and weight loss (not such a bad side effect).

Neurontin actually gave me a new kind of headache every day...it was very annouing.  I didnt give it more than 2 weeks before I gave up on that one.

Imatrex (and the new Imatrex) make me vomit, so the side effects are not worth it!  I read an article here that there is a new medication simaler to Zomig.  It was approve in november of 08.  It may be worth a try.

I am curious to see what other answers you get from this post.

Nice to meet you, I am new here to this forum.Smile

Susie,

Zonegran (zonisamide) is another medication in this class that some people find effective for Migraine prevention.

You can read more in our Zonegran Profile. It seldom causes weight gain and lists weight loss and loss of appetite as potential side effects.

Hope this helps,

Teri

Everyone is different regarding medication issues. As to why you're taking Lyrica for epilepsy I cannot answer and will not begin to attempt. What I will say is I am taking topomax and Fellbatol currently. I have been on Topomax for years and never had any issues with gaining weight and I've been an MBA student for the past 2 years studying online. My butt has been planted in front of the computer either researching, reading, or writing thesis papers for the past two years for this degree.

Prior to that I was taking Topomax still but I was on a different mix of medication. I had been taking Lamictal and Inderal which is a beta blocker. Now if you don't have any issues with your blood pressure I suggest not to try it. Reason, if you don't have issues, the medication can cause a problem. We tried it to see if it would work.

Oh, before I did the switch over to where I am now, I also tried something called Zonegran and for me, that did absolutely nothing. I will say it again every person will react differently. The reactions which I have may not be what you would have in taking the same type of medication.

What I can best suggest is to ask a lot of questions to both your neurologist and to your pharmacist.

Best of luck!

This animation shows one of the key causes of pain during a migraine--changes to the blood flow within the brain.
