Q: Can you take Birth control as a migraine sufferer?

When my migraines began I was told to stop taking my birth control. Will I ever be able to use it again?

Megan,

This is a discussion for you and your doctors. Both Migraines and oral contraceptives increase risk of stroke, so many doctors recommend that women with Migraine not use hormonal birth control methods.

Certainly, there are birth control methods that aren't hormonal, and they should be possibilities. If you're being treated by different doctors for Migraine and birth control, it could be helpful to have those doctors consult, preferably with you participating in the consultation.

Good luck,

Teri

Interesting. I take birth control to regulate my migraines. I get them frequently to begin with but the ones I get around my cycle are some of the worst I've ever had. I'm on a seasonal birth control so that I only have to deal with menstral migraines 4 times a year. What kind have you been on?

I was taking normal 28 day ones, I was on it to regulate my cycle, so I tried a few different brands

I have had migraines most of my life. I was told about the risk of getting on birth control with having had such severe migraines. I was put on no estrogen pills. I was on them for less than a month and experienced worse migraines. I was immediately told to stop and advised never to take them again. There has been evidence that this increases the risk of having a stroke. I am sure it is different for every person. There are numerous types of birth control. I would suggest talking to your doctor to find the best one to try. Monitor your migraines and symptoms carefully to see if there are any changes. Good luck!
