Q: ergotamine seems to work the best for me. I used to use Cafergot but it is no longer being made. I have tried Imitrex but my results are not good. Looking for something to replace cafergot.

research comes up with Egromar SL. Has anyone tried this and is it as good as Cafergot?

Rosemary,

I've never tried Ergomar, but thought I'd offer you some additional information.

The FDA web site shows that Sandoz is still making Cafergot. It also shows two companies making generic ergotamine tartrate and caffeine tablets - West Ward and Mikart.

Other ergotamine Migraine abortive medications include Migranal Nasal Spray and D.H.E. 45, which is injected subcutaneously.

Hope this helps.

Welcome again,

Teri

HI Rosemary,

Cafergot works the best for me as well.  I went to pick up my prescription this week and told it could not be filled.  After searching and calling a compounding pharmacist told me she could make it for me.  You just need to have your doctor write the prescription for "Cafergot - Compounded" and take it or have it sent to your nearest compounding pharmacy.  There should be one in your area.  Just go on the Academy of Compounding Pharmacists Websites and do a zipcode search.

Compounding pharmacies can duplicate discontinued medications as long as they are still approved by the FDA

I picked up my prescription today, I am so relieved.  I did not know, until this week that this was an option.

Please let me know if it works for you in compound form. It did not work for me - maybe I had a bad pharmacy???

By the way, it did not work for my daugter either. I did not tell her it was a compound. Everytime she took it, she told me "It doesn't work anymore." Months later I told her it was a compound. When she went back to the generic or Cafergot, it worked again.

I have been using the compounded formula for three months now (on my second refill) and it works exactly the same as the generic/cafergot brand.  I would find another compounding pharmacy (yours may have had the ergotamine sitting on the shelf too long).
