Lisa,

One of the effects of the ergotamine medications -- DHE and Migranal Nasal Spray -- and the triptans -- Imitrex, Maxalt, Zomg, etc. -- is constricting of blood vessels to counteract the blood vessel dilation that occurs during a Migraine. Because hemiplegic Migraine often has so many stroke symptoms and acts somewhat differently in the brain, it's thought that constricting the blood vessels may further increase the risk of stroke in patients with hemiplegic Migraine.

hope this helps,

Teri
