I have a friend suffering from constant migraines which I believe is stemming from a work injury.

Im not sure how long ago the work injury occured. But my friend had suffered a bulged disk in her neck along with a concussion. She has taken Furicet, Tylenol 4 w/ codine and both have not helped at all. She takes Tramadol 50mg 4xday which helps with pain but she has trouble sleeping. She has had demerol injections which have not helped either. 3 different doctors say that her illness is permanent and may not be treatable. She has no family history of migraines. She states that the migraines are everyday and last all day. The pain is mostly around the back right side of the neck around the head and all around the right eye. She states having been to the Pain Center for aqua massage and ultrasound electric stimulations but can't always afford it. She has had 3 cervical spine injections with no relief of the pain. She says ice and heat massages help settle pain but only temporarily. She is waiting an approval to be seen for an occipital nerve block. I am asking for some help as to what may be wrong with her situation and what she may need to have done to fix the constant migraines?

My first real experience with chronic head pain...

Friday, May 01, 2009

Hi marcus,

I'm sorry to hear about your friend. The best thing may be for her to see a Migraine specialist rather than a neurologist. I'm sure her neurologist is a fine doctor, but it's difficult for him to be an expert in any one area because he treats so many different conditions like MS, epilepsy, stroke and Parkinson's. A Migraine/headache specialist treats one area - Migraines and headaches. We have a list of patient recommended specialists she can see HERE.

Good luck

Nancy

This animation shows one of the key causes of pain during a migraine--changes to the blood flow within the brain.
