Hi, Patty,
The recommended dosage of Topamax is 50 mg twice a day, with the dose based on clinical outcomes. Many people take 100 mg twice a day because they got some help from 50 mg twice a day, and their doctors increased it for better results.
It's recommended that if it's not helping at 100 mg twice a day, it be tapered down and discontinued.
For some forms of seizures, the recommended dosage goes as high as 200 mg twice a day.
I'm not finding anything about it not being safe at higher dosese.
Is it working for you? I'd suggest getting a second opinion from another doctor if you're uncomfortable with your doctor's treatment recommendations.

hello patty, i also suffer with severe chronic migraines..how long have u been on the topamax? have u noticed any side effects? i only caution u because i was on topamax as well and when my dr increased me to 200 twice a day i had severe cognitive side effects.i was habing memory loss, repeating myself and not realizing it,and not functing as myself..i have not heard of it going higher than the two hundred,my dr told me that was the max.i reccomend talking to your dr and discussing your concerns.you are in control, always remember that.and if you are still concerbed you have every right to get a second opinion.dont hesitate.if you are concerned, ask questions..
