Q: My 59-year old brother-in-law has been bed-ridden from nearly 15 years with migraines

My 59-year old brother-in-law has been bed-ridden from nearly 15 years (yes YEARS) with migraine headaches and subsequent related issues. He often gets sick (vomiting & chills) even though he has been taking his medications.  He weighs just over 100 pounds!

He visits the local VA hospital regularly but all they seem to want to do is prescribe medication and do nothing more - all tests for other conditions like heart desease, cancer, etc. come up negative.  He appears to have no desire to get up and do anything and is basically so weak he can't do much anyway. He seems to be in catch-22 situation.

His family has basically deserted him and he moved in with us about 7 months ago but we have seen no improvement. We would like to know who to turn to; what type of facility could he go to where someone could watch him 24/7 to see if he could get better. He only gets a small check from SS, and is on Medicare, so he doesn't have the means (nor do we) to pay for residential care or a rehab/assisted living facility.

My husband and I had to travel aware from home for 10 days recently, and while gone he didn't take his meds correctly; when we returned he was halucinating - my husband took him to the emergency room and they said they couldn't admit him for observation because he was basically not 'bleeding to death' but rather just needed to get his body back on the right track with the meds.  He really needs personal care which we are unable to provide as we both work full time. He has been through all the usual and out-of-the-ordinary tests - accupuncture, surgery on the base of his neck, diet changes, Botox, etc. - you name it and he has tried it with no success.

We - HE NEEDS HELP. Where can we go for help?

Concerned,

-:¦:-•:*'""*:•.-:¦:-•*Welcome to MyMigraineConnection!*•-:¦:-•:*'""*:•.-:¦:-

The best advice I can offer is to get him to a real Migraine specialist. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? From your ID, you're in Dayton? Dayton, Ohio? If so, check on a Migraine specialist at the Cleveland Clinic; that's probably the closest to you. You can find contact information in Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists. I think they accept Medicare, and they might be able to admit him. That, of course, would be a decision for him and the doctor. I can't say whether they'd admit him or not.

As for his needing personal care, find your local office for the Department of Health and Human Services. He might qualify for Medicaid, and if he does, there are various services that could help with his care.

I hope this helps. Please keep us posted?

Welcome again,

Teri
