Q: Where can I get treatment for hemiplegic migraines?

I'm from the central Arkansas area and have seen multiple neurologists without successfull treatment. I've been diagnosed with silent migraines, migraine syndrome, migraine phenomenon, and/or hemiplegic migraines. They happen daily (since November) and range from annoying to unable to walk or talk. The neurologists I have seen here sent me to "the best in the area" and they basically said I did not have seizures and was crazy.

I'm on my 6th med without improvement. And yes I did start therapy because of the emotional stress this is causing. I need help though and can't afford to track accross the country with chart in hand looking for help.

When I call, most people do not understand how I can have a migraine without pain. That's when pretty much I know I've hit another wall.

Help please. I want someone with experiance, who is not completely guessing at how to treat this.

Thanks, Painlessly lost.

Hi Painlessly lost,

It sounds like you have been through quite the time lately, I'm sorry to hear that. So you don't have any pain with your attack? The first thing you need to do is get an accurate diagnosis. This simplifies matters and makes it easier for people to get information and treatment. Doctors usually go by the gold standard for diagnosis, the International Headache Society's International Classification of Headache Disorders, 2nd Edition (ICHD-II). Under ICHD-II, Hemiplegic Migraine is a rare form of Migraine disease which you can read more about it in this article Hemiplegic Migraine - The Basics and The Type of Migraine Does Matter.

Since your doctor isn't able to help you, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

Having said how important Migraine speciaists are, I can see your resources are limited in regards to your doctor expenses. I wish I had an answer for this problem, but I don't. I've been there myself and know how very difficult that makes everything. I can only tell you how I managed, which was to budget very strictly to get the money together for doctors.

I hope this information helps,

Nancy
