Q: I get urinary burning a few hours after a aura migrain attack...Why?

I've been averaging one migrain (with aura and urinary burning) a month for the past few months.  I've had them off and on (very rarely) since I was a child.  I'm 35 and wondering why I'm also having this urinary pain accompanying it? Thank You for your time.

Hi Travelingfaces!

I'm so sorry to hear that you have Migraine disease, and the urinary pain as well. Have you kept track of the things you come in contact with when the Migraine and urinary pain co-exist? Is it the same abortive medication you are using? Maybe a food that is sensitive to your system?

I know that for me, when I take my abortive, it makes me have to urinate more often than normal. As far as pain goes, I have not experienced that with an abortive, but I did experience more frequent UTI's with my last preventive, Topamax.

Have you mentioned this to your doctor? If not, it would be a good idea, especially if you are taking medications as well.

As for why you are having this pain, I don't know the answer to that. Although frequent urination is often a symptom of Migraine, I've never seen this burning listed as part of a Migraine. This is definitely something you should discuss with your doctor.

Good luck,

Eileen Gray
