Q: Anyone ever have cheap alcohol be a trigger?

I have atypical migraines, where I actually feel like I'm getting a terrible sinus headache with fatigue and headache.  I end up feeling sick for a week or so.

I'm noticing the last 2 times I've gotten one was the day after enjoying mixed drinks at a night out.  Nothing too much, so it's not a hangover, but both times the drinks were cheap well-drinks.  I don't get a reaction when I drink at home or if I get a better drink out.

I know wine can be a trigger, but can cheap alcohol?

Hi Melissa,

Alcohol of any type, cheap and/or expensive, can trigger a Migraine attack for some people. There are some who can have mixed drinks (in moderation of course) and not be triggered, while one glass of wine (cheap or expensive) will trigger a nasty Migraine attack.

A word regarding "atyical" Migraine, you see it's not a diagnosis, but rather a descriptive term. We do see it used, but doctors use it differently, so it really doesn't tell anyone what type of Migraine you actually have. That's why one of the most important things is to get that accurate diagnosis. This will help simplify matters and make it easier for you to get information and treatment. To achieve an accurate diagosis, doctors usually go by the gold standard for diagnosis, the International Headache Society's International Classification of Headache Disorders, 2nd Edition (ICHD-II). Although people often ask what “atypical” Migraines are, there’s no such diagnoses under ICHD-II.  You can read more about this in Optical, Ocular and Ophthalmic Migraine and The Type of Migraine Does Matter.

Sinus headaches are rare unless you have a sinus infection. At least 90% of what people think are sinus headaches are actually Migraines. You can read more about this in Sinuses Giving You a Headache? It's Probably a Migraine.

I hope this  helps,

Nancy

Thanks for your reply, Nancy.

Yes, with my diagnosis, I finally got the answer to what 20+ years of suffereing with "sinus headaches" and "head colds" really was.  My diagnosis helped my mother who didn't know she was actually having migraines, not sinus headaches.

Whether or not my illness is "real" or a "just" descriptive term or not, I'm beyond thrilled to finally have the pieces come together so I can get much needed relief.  Now I am paying attention to triggers (weathe fronts in fall/winter and now seems to be certain types of licquor) and what I can do to prevent attacks until I am able to take medication when my daughter is weaned.

Good to hear you are keeping track of triggers and trying to avoid them. Staying hydrated, keeping a regular sleep schedule (difficult with a baby) and not skipping meals is also very helpful.

We have some information in our Ask the Clinician section about what nursing moms  can take for Migraine. Continue reading this for more information; Hydrocodone for headaches & Migraines while breastfeeding?  This question addresses other medications besides hydrocodone.

Keep us posted on your progress, Ok?
