Q: miraines that start duing sleep?

My 10 year old daughter has suffered with migranes for 5 years. We had a brain mri done and fortunately it was normal.  We have been treating with Motrin as needed and it is working if taken in time.

Recently, she has been waking up in the middle of the night with a migrain, is this normal?  should I have another brain mri done?

i am very concerned

thank you for your time

Hi mimi,

No, it is not "normal" for a 10 year old to wake up every night with a Migraine.

How many days a week is your daughter taking to relieve these headaches? Taking any kind of pain medication -- prescription or over-the-counter -- or Migraine abortive meds such as the triptans or ergotamines -- more than two or three days a week can make matters worse by causing medication overuse headache (MOH), aka rebound. See Medication Overuse Headache - When the Remedy Backfires for more information on this.

But there is another type of headache called Hypnic Headache, that typically doesn't begin until adulthood. Of course that doesn't mean it can't happen it children. You can read more about this in the article: Hypnic Headache - The Basics.

I hope this helps, let me know, ok?

Nancy

I have had migraines for almost 30 years and have ones that wake me during the night.  Although frequency reduced over time, stilll get moderate to severe migraines almost every month.  I was diagnosed with Classic Migraine w/Aura.  I have had several diagnostic tests including CT scan, etc. and also have a narrowed blood vessel on the left side of my head.  None of my doctors have been alarmed by the ones that wake me.  The theory is that I am not awake to get the usual, visual cues and know to take the abortive medication.  Therefore, the pain progresses to the point of extreme and wakes me.  I would still mention it to your daughter's doctor.

I wish Motrin worked for me!  I use Maxalt MLT and it works most of the time.  But when it doesn't or when a severe one wakes me, I end up in the ER since I currently don't have a doctor to prescribe the necessary pain medication for severe migraines.  I pray your daughter gets better and that, like me, they will decrease over time!

Thank you so much for your input.  I truely appreciate it.

I guess I have to realize that she is changing into a woman and female hormones will now be playing a role in  her migraines.

Also, I think that the motrin didn't do as good of a job of kicking the migrane because, like you said, she was not awake to feel the onset.

She is better this morning,  it took 4 doses of Motrin to finally kick it.

I am so grateful that I found this website and have logged it onto my favorites.

Bless you
