Q: Can suboccipital nerve blocks cause muscle atrophy in that area?

I received 2 bilateral suboccipital nerve blocks 10 months ago.  Although they seemed to help for a couple weeks, it appeared I would need to continue monthly injections.  My insurance wouldn't cover the costs so we didn't do anymore.  About 4-5 months later, I started noticing what appears to be muscle atrophy in the suboccipital area on both sides.  As of today, there is a large "hole" there which I can only attribute to severe atrophy.  I get more pain and spasms in that area than I EVER had. I am a Physical Therapist and have seen muscle wasting in people after steroid injections in their extremities but I don't know anyone else (personally) who had these nerve blocks.  Has anyone else noticed this or something similar? Is there a way to reverse it?

Hi Rhea,

Nope, I've never heard of nerve blocks causing muscle atrophy before. I checked with Teri and she's never heard of it before either.

Good luck

Nancy

Do you have any idea what may have caused this?  I don't remember having such big open areas there! I have also noticed that before a migraine really starts full force, I get severe tightness on the borders of these  "holes" that hurts as much as the headache.  I usually put a hard, iced bottle on the back of my neck while I'm supine so I can apply direct pressure over it...it doesn't really help! I've also tried heat with no relief. It just doesn't make sense to me.  Thanks again for your help and insight.
