My Eleven year old granddaughter has been having severe headaches in the back of her head, sometimes also on one side, sensitivity to light and to noise. Her pediatrician diagnosed her with migraines and suggested a little caffiene might help. He recommended she see a pediatric neurologist. That could take weeks or months for us to get an appointment. Meanwhile, she takes OTC medicine that does nothing to relieve her pain and she just wants to sleep. This last headache is going on 27 hours and is getting worse, not better. There must be something we can do to relieve her pain. I can't help but think this has to do with her body hitting puberty but not yet menstruating, or her diagnosis of scoliosis in January. I just want to stop her pain.

Zoe's grandmother,

I'm not a doctor, but I am a mother with 2 children who have migraines.  If you are giving her ibuprofen or motrin for headache relief, each of those can cause a rebound headache which is usually worse and longer than the original one.  Our own doctor recommended taking them to the emergency room for treatment until they could see a neurologist.  The ER doctors did what they could to help relieve the pain, set up an appointment with a neurologist that was earlier than the appointment my doctor made and in one instance admitted my child to run tests.

I hope this helps.  I understand the anguish you are going through.  You are not alone.  God Bless!  Nettie K. Pennsylvania

This animation shows one of the key causes of pain during a migraine--changes to the blood flow within the brain.
