Q: Med allergies and ER visits

Hi, advice on ER visits please....I have about three days of migraine a week, and so far neuro and I haven't found a good preventative. I have had more than one status migraine, and was asking my neuro about ER trips last time I had an appt. I'm allergic (as in anaphalaxis) to triptans, NSAIDs, aspirin, ibuprofen, anything like that, and my neuro basically said that because of my med allergies, there was nothing they could give me at the ER to stop the migraine, just maybe manage pain. Is that true? What are the kinds of things ER docs can do to abort a migraine? Thanks for the help!

musibeth,

There's no way I can say that any medication is safe for you. That can only be determined by your own doctor.

That said, there may be other options. For example: An IV infusion of simple magnesium sulfate can stop a Migraine and works well for many people with intractable Migraine or status Migranousus. You can get more info about meds used for IV infusion in IV Treatment of Refractory Migraines.

It may also be time for you to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

Please keep me posted?

Hey Teri,

I have asked my doc, and he says that it will just depend on what the doc in the ER feels is best (didn't even really say, 'could be this, or this, or this').  I'm looking for a new neuro, for several reasons, including I don't like that he doesn't have any type of emergency contact for any reason (ie-its the weekend, but I have a terrible migraine that isn't responding to meds, etc); but, there aren't any migraine specialist near us (closest is 4 hrs away: checked your specialist listings).  Right now my parents and I are deciding whether to try a new neuro locally, or if we want to travel the 4 hrs to get a migraine specialist.

I was just hoping to hear what a few of my options might be, because I'm currently not using the ER, even for migraines that last too long.  I was basically told there wasn't anything they could do, but that didn't make any sense, because I can't be the only migraineur who can't take triptans!  And I'm really not comfortable with the risks of just letting a migraine go on and on (my record is eight days with only two two-to-three hour breaks while awake -- and that scares me a bit).

But now I've seen that there are at least two options that should be safe for me.  So thanks for both ya'lls answers!

Beth

I have seen migraines treated in the ER I work in with a combination of IV Benadryl and an IV antiemetic.  I have never had the treatment myself, but for some patients it seems to work.
