Q: I suffer from HM, and migraine w/aura.

My neuro won't prescribe any medications such as triptans for my classic migraines.  Is this standard with most neurologists?  I can tell the diffference between the 2 types of migraine.  The HM obviously has the left sided paralysis (for me left sided) so it is not difficult to determine the difference between the two.  Just wondering what meds others take that have the same diagnosis.  Thanks

Hi allinmyhead,

Currenty triptans are contraindicated in aborting Hemiplegic Migraine (HM) due to the vasoconstrictive properties and concerns about stroke. There was a small study conducted safely using triptans but more work needs to be done before any conclusions are made about using them with HM. For more information on Hemiplegic Migraines continue reading our article: Hemiplegic Migraine - The Basics.

Are you on a preventive medication? Verapamil, lamictal, topamax and diamox are all used for Migraine prevention including Hemiplegic Migraine.

I hope this helps.

Nancy
