Q: Is there any relationship between cervical disc diease and custer headaches?

I recently developed a right-sided headache that is horrible and occurs around 4:00pm everyday. Lasts from 1 hour to three hours. This is my 13th day into this.  I sometimes vomit and nothing I do helps the pain. Pain starts at the right side above the eye and radiates down into face, teeth, ear and neck. My nose sometimes clogs up and eye tears. Terrible pain.  Nothing helps.   I have cervial degenerative disc diease and wonder if there is any connection?  I am desperate for help.  ER doctor seems to think there is a connection between the two. CAT scan is normal and sinus scan show mild sinus connection. I go to the Spinal Dr. today.  Help please.

Beverly,

Have you been diagnosed with cluster headaches? Vomiting is not typical of cluster headaches. Other than that, the symptoms you list are fairly typical of cluster headache, but they're also typical of Migraine. Take a look at Cluster Headaches - The Basics and Anatomy of a Migraine for more information.

I know of no connection between cervical disc disease and cluster headaches. However, cervical disc issues have been known to precipitate tension-type headaches which, in turn, can trigger Migraine attacks.

Good luck,

Teri

My experience with Migraines and headaches in general has just been seriously addressed as stemming from my overly straight neck (scoliosis)  The issue increased after my third child.  My neck has become even more straight over the years, and the correct chiropractic care using the pulse-star type method combined with traditional chiropractic manual manipulations are making some progress with my problems.  I have been to neurologists and taken preventive meds with no long-term success, leading me to believe it was skelital, and this seems to be helping a great deal.  My migraine instances from usual triggers is down.  I do struggle with the neck pain turning into migraine, but magnesium is helpful to calm the muscles down naturally when taken on a regular basis; nice part is it only takes a couple days to notice it is helping.

I wish you the best.
