Q: Headache that switches sides

I have a headache at only one side of the head but changes sides. it lasts all day but paracetamol alone kills the pain. I am wondering what i am having, which is probably not a migraine?

Hi amethysts,

Migraines can certainly change sides throughout an attack. Paracetamol can help some lucky Migraineurs with Migraine pain, however that doesn't necessarily mean you are having a Migraine. It also doesn't mean that you aren't.

One clue that it's time to see a doctor about our headache pain is when it changes. If this is a new or different symptom, then please get to your doctor. Only a doctor can diagnose you, by looking at you as well as your personal medical history, and asking you questions that will help him/her make an appropriate decision what they think is going on.

There are over 300 different headache disorders, and diagnosing them isn't easy. Add to that, that some of these have symptoms that can change, like Migraine, and you can maybe see why diagnosing these disorders is often not nearly as easy as one might think.

If your doctor isn’t able to help, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It’s important to note that neurologists aren’t necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special?
