Q: Do you need to have a heart murmur to have a PFO?

My son has daily migraine.  I'm interested in having a TEE test to rule out PFO (patent formulae ovulae), but the doctors say it's not indicated because he has no murmur.

Cheryl,

I just checked this with a specialist, and he said you do not necessarily hear a murmur with a PFO. However, please stand by. Some new reports came out today about PFO and  Migraine, and you should have this new information. We'll have it up here on the site on Monday (Oct. 13).

Thanks!
Teri

We are also interested in having our son tested for a PFO. He has daily migraines as well as Familial Hemiplegic Migraines. He is 18 and has suffered for 9 years.

How old is your son and how long has he been having them? What has his/your experience been like dealing with this?

We are seeing our doctor today to discuss the test, cost, etc. If you have found out any information, we'd love to hear from you about it.
