Q: Anyone with information about ice pick headaches?

I've read quite a few things about them and basically i keep reading that usually something triggers them or some kind of injury would cause them. The only injury to my head i've ever really gotten i got when i was 8. I was hit in the head with a metal baseball bat, but i don't think that it would effect me now..would it? It didn't even really hit me hard, just enough to put a bruise on my forehead.

Hi kwall2010,

Absolutely! We have information on ice pick headaches. Ice Pick Headaches are considered a primary headache disorder which means they are not caused by another condition. Please read our article: Ice Pick Headaches - The Basics.

If your headache has changed, you need to discuss this with your doctor. Anytime we have a change in our Migraine or headache pattern it is best to talk to the doctor about it.

Good luck and let us know how you make out, ok?

Nancy

Okay thanks i'll read it. The only problem with me talking to a doctor about it is my mom thinks that maybe it's just stress and it'll go away on it's own, so i'm not sure if she'll take me.

I used to get much more severe migraines and often it did feel like an ice pick, and vomiting sometimes--this had gotten this bad after I got married.  This was in the 1960's and I had started taking birth control pills.

I told the Dr. and he said it could be the pills but since they had recently found they could do the same thing with less dosage, he cut mg. of "the pill" in half.  I didn't notice any difference in the headaches.

Then next time I saw him, he said they had found you can get the same results from "the pill" by cutting the mg. in half again (a quarter of what I was originally taking).

But I still got the bad headaches, but then I read that it takes about 8-9 months to get the hormone out of your system.  So I didn't use that method of birth control anymore and no vomiting and not as severe headaches since!  (Don't know if that's your problem but it might help someone.)

Also try one of the blue ice packs that you leave in the freezer until you need it.  I had 2 as sometimes they warm up too much before the headache leaves.

i've had ice pick headaches for years and didn't even know they had a name until they were running my life!!

i was getting 20-30 a day and i was scared.

i was referred to a neurologist in london, ontario, canada who gave me a 'cocktail' of drugs and i've been taking them for 11 years with only the occasional ice pick .

when i do get one it still takes me by surprise and i hold my breath until it's passed.

i take elavil at night and gabapentin and indomethacin 3 times a day.

these work for me.

i hope you can get help from your dr. soon.

Hi there again,

Maybe you could show your mom the article and see what she says? We have a wonderful podcast or you can have her read it too, about whether or not stress is a Migraine trigger. I may be good information for you both! What do ya think?

I'll give you the link.....   Podcast: Migraine Trigger Identification and Management

Let me know what you think, ok?
