Hi alicia,

Do you mean having a spinal tap? Your spinal cord doesn't get drained, but the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) surrounding it does. This is done to rule in or/out certain conditions.

Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH) formerly known as Pseudotumor Cerebri or PTC, is a condtion where intractable headache is one of the major symptoms. Sometimes when a patient gets a spinal tap, and the CSF is reduced, their head pain is reduced as well. Of course there are other criteria that need to be meet and only a doctor can diagnose you. We have information on this condition in this article: Pseudotumor Cerebri (IIH) - The Basics.

Good luck

Nancy
