Q: Do you lose weight because of daily migraines ? I am having migraines for last 5 weeks now and I have lost 10-15 lbs. I am worried about it.

BTW I am 43 and was 5'7'' - 160 lbs and now I am close to 148 lbs.

This is my first time posting, so leaving out the details.

I have been having migraines almost daily for past 5 weeks with blood pressure spiking during the episodes to 155/105 range.

Now for past week or so I am on Metroprolol 50mg and BP is under control.  But all this while I have and am continue to lose weight.  I am also significantly weeker.  I fail to understand as to what's going on.

Hi pras,

No, weight loss does not occur "because" of daily Migraines. Weight loss can happen for many reasons, not eating due to nausea, or upset stomach, or just eating less and moving more. Weight loss can also happen with many other conditions. This needs to be addressed by your doctor, who can go over your medical history, your family's medical history, do a complete exam and review your symptoms with you.

At this point, stopping this headache or Migraine that you've had for five weeks needs to be a priority. When oral medications have failed, IV infusions will often break the cycle. For more information about this, see IV Treatment of Refractory Migraines

It may be time to see an expert. And here's why: neurologists may be fine doctors, but it's difficult for them to be experts in any one area because they treat so many different conditions like MS, stroke and epilepsy. It's not that the doctor isn't  listening, rather, they really aren't well informed about Migraine disease. Migraine specialists treat one disease - ours -  Migraines and headaches. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists. There are only 290 board certified doctors in the US in headache medicine. Try to find one who can help you.

You'll need to register again once there because it's a separate membership database, but you can use the same member name, email address, and password that you used here. Good luck

Thanks Nancy for taking the time to respond to my posting.  I was pleasantly surprised to see a response.

Could you please let me know where one could find the list of the 290 board certified doctors in headache medicine ?

Again, thanks for your support - Pras

Hi there,

We have a Patient recommended listing of Migraine specialists here on our site you can view; Migraine Specialist Directory. That list is patient recommended and reviewed by Teri Robert. The Migraine Research Foundation has a listing of The United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties (UCNS) board certified doctors in headache medicine.

Hope that helps,

Nancy
