Q: Anyone on an actual medicine for awful daily headaches that does not cause weight gain?

Anyone have any ideas for chronic daily headache sufferers? I began Inderal and Tramadol yesterday and read terrible things about the Inderal today. I have taken so many medicines I feel like a lab rat. My daily headaches are taking any fun out of my life. Any ideas or suggestions are welcome and appreciated. Thanks.

Hi melodyprobst,

I know how easy it is to feel as if you've tried everything out there, but there are so many medications that can be used for Migraine and headache prevention that it's literally impossible. You can find a list of potential Migraine and headache preventives in Migraine preventive medications - too many options to give up!

It is imperative for purposes of treatment, learning about your Migraines and being able to get care if you're away from home, to have the proper diagnosis of what type of Migraine you have. You can read more about this in The Type of Migraine Does Matter.

Chronic Daily Headache - The Basics  has information on this type of headache. I'm not saying you have this type of headache, just giving you information on it.  It may be time to see a MIgraine and headache specialist if your doctor isn't able to help you. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

Good luck

Nancy

I'm on propanolol, it takes a bit of getting used to but it  hasn't caused any weight gain, and it's pretty good in terms of keeping calm. =]

Topamax and Zonegram are anti-convulsants that actually have weight loss as a potential side effect.  They have both been suggested to me as treatment for CDH, but haven't tried them yet.

I am on the muscle relaxant Zanaflex and it doesn't seem to have weight gain as a side effect.  I am on a pretty restrictive diet so I have lost weight over the past 1.5 years despite taking tricyclic imipramine, so I am not the best one to judge (tricyclics usually DO cause weight gain) but I have found I'm losing weight faster on the Zanaflex.  Just my experience, and not seeing weight gain on the side effect list.  Only useful if lack of sleep or muscle spasicity is thought to play a role in your headache though.  Hope you have a headache specialist or can see one.  IKWYM about feeling like a lab rat though.  Gastritis from NSAIDs, heart issues from DHE...I may fix my head by taking out all the other organs!!
