Q: Can depression cause a migraine attack?

I have struggled with migraines since I was about 8 and was diagnosed with depression when i was about 17.  My depression has been under pretty good control, but yesterday I got really depressed and today woke up with a severe migraine.  I know that there is a link between migraine & depression usually with depression being caused by suffereing from migraines.  But I was just wondering if depression can actually cause a migraine attack?

Thanks

No, depression cannot trigger a Migraine attack. What you may be experiencing is the first phase of a Migraine attack, the phase called prodrome. A Migraine attack affects serotonin levels, and that can make you feel depressed.

Mood swings, feeling depressed, even panic attacks can be symptoms of a Migraine attack. For more information about the phases of a Migraine, inlcuding the prodrome, see our article Anatomy of a Migraine.
