Q: Are Double Auras Dangerous?

Hi I am experiencing now, for the first time ever, a double aura. It started as a normal aura, and went through the cycle and then it started over again when it was finished. I am a 43 year old female and migraines have been increasing. I called the Er and they said its nothing to worry about but I am still worried. Are there any signs I should look for that would make me need to go to the ER? I also have panic disorder so it does not take much for me to start freaking out.

Hi calista,

It depends what other symptoms come with them I would suppose. The general rule of thumb is any time we experience new, different or troublesome symptoms call your doctor, not the ER. The ER is not equipped to handle cases like this over the phone they don't know you or your medical history.

If you have the worst head pain of your life get to the ER immediately.

Let us know how you are doing?

Hi

I feel some better now. There was not much of a headache after the auras. The difference was it was double aura. like 2 separate ones, one right after the other. Actually, The ER staff know me well. I live in a small town and the funny thing is when I called the nurse who answered asked the Doctor about it and I heard the Dr. Say "Is that Calista xxxxxxx?" loooooool. I was just in there that day with a headache and 2 weeks before with one too. However, a few months ago I had one and I took some antinausea meds that I had here and about 30 minutes later I had the worst pain ever. It was so bad that I had to squeeze my head to even think. It was really really bad. My migraines have been way out of control, except for in Feb when i was taking daily magnesium. I bought some more today and also some epsom salts. I was hoping that epsom baths were a good source of magnesium too. I am going to research that further before taking any baths. I feel today like an aura is pending...my eyes are shifty and spotty like when you are so tired. My mood is irritable. It feels like a prodrome phase for sure.Either that or its the end of a long day with a house full of crumb dropping, shreiking, xbox 360 playing bunch of little boys.

I will keep on the boards and read around. Thank you again for the helpful words and advice.

A Stroke is my biggest fear. Has been since I was a teen....Whenever I get an aura I try not to think about it. the other night I was doing pretty well staying calm..until it started again.

Hi Calista,

I don't know if it is dangerous or not, but I have over the past 30 years had several episodes of multiple auras in a row. I know how scary it is, I also panic  when they happen. A few of my friends have also experienced this. I hope it helps to know you are not alone. You might want to research magnesium for preventing migraines or speak to a doctor about it.  I started taking 400 mg a day and have been migraine free for over a month. Hope this helps.   Leslie

Hi Leslie,

Thank you so much for your response. It sure was the strangest thing. I feel okay now..The funny thing is that when the Aura started, I was like, Okay, this is just an Aura and I can get through it and no need to get all worked up...trying to keep the anxiety down...I took my pills and had some coffee and went on with my business trying to just normalize it all and be cool about it. Then it started again and blew all that coolness out of the water HA HA HA> that'll teach me to be calm!!!!

Come to think about it, I took magnesium in Feb. of this year and the whole month was aura free. I ran out and they started up again. Time to get some more.

Thanks again for your words. They do make me feel less alone.
