Q: My 7 yr. old daughter is starting to get headaches.

She says that her tummy hurts too.  Is that a sign that she is getting migraines?

juliemh,

-:¦:-•:*'""*:•.-:¦:-•*Welcome to MyMigraineConnection!*•-:¦:-•:*'""*:•.-:¦:-

It could be a sign that she's getting Migraines, but it could be something else too. Sorry it's not as simple as "Yes" or "No."

Is there a history of Migraine, "sick headaches," or sinuse headaches on either side of the family? Especially in previous generations, we often find references to "sick headaches," which were actually Migraines; and the majority of what people think are sinus headaches are Migraines.

Talk with her doctor about her headaches and tummy aches. Being able to tell him or her about family history will be important too.

Have you noticed any triggers that are bringing on these headaches? That's something else to watch for. A Migraine and headache diary can be helpful for that. You can find information about keeping a diary as well as a free downloadable diary workbook in our article Your Migraine and Headache Diary.

I was six when I had my first Migraine. Now, four of our grandchildren have them, so I know this is difficult for you and your daughter. Please keep me posted?

Welcome again,

Teri

My huband, sister in-law and my sister get Migraines.  I get sinus headaches but not Miigranies.  She is still having them to this day.  I have been giving her pain meds. but that doesn't ever take care of it.

Julie,

I'm no doctor, but from the statistics, I have to wonder if you have Migraines rather than sinus headaches. Sinus headaches are extremely rare unless you have a sinus infection. Here's some information for you, Sinuses Giving You a Headache? It's Probably a Migraine. With Migraine on both sides of the family, your daughter has a 75% chance of inheriting the disease.

How frequent are these headaches or Migraines? What has her doctor said?

Something else to know is that taking pain medications more than two or three days a week can make matters worse by causing medication overuse headaches, aka rebound. You can find info on that in Medication Overuse Headache: When the Remedy Backfires.

If her doctor isn't able to help, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

I hope this helps. Don't hesitate to ask more questions or tell me what other information I can help you with. I have not taken her to the Dr. yet. Today she told me that another kid in her class has the same thing.  The headaches lasted for three days.   So I am thinking that it was just a sickness that was going around the school.  But if she gets more heaaches I will take her in.   My doughter just told me that she gets them at night.    LIke right now  shes getting one.  I just wish that I take it all  away so she can be headache free.
