pia,
-:¦:-•:*'""*:•.-:¦:-•*Welcome to MyMigraineConnection!*•-:¦:-•:*'""*:•.-:¦:-
What do you mean by analgesic? Do you mean medications such as acetaminophen?
Do you mean he takes the analgesic for a day or two, and the pain stops, then comes back?
There are a few factors to consider...
How many days a week does he take analgesics? Taking Migraine abortive meds such as the triptans or ergotamines or any kind of pain medication, including simple analgesics -- prescription or over-the-counter -- more than two or three days a week can make matters worse by causing medication overuse headache (MOH), aka rebound. See Medication Overuse Headache - When the Remedy Backfires for more information on this.
There are medications developed specifically to be taken when we get a Migraine. The most common of these medications are the triptan family. There are seven medications in the triptan family-- Imitrex, Maxalt, Zomig, Amerge, Relpax, Axert, and Frova -- as well as Treximet, which is a combination of Imitrex and Naproxen Sodium. Each of the triptans binds to different combinations of serotonin receptors, which is why our bodies may respond differently to each of them.
The best thing to do at this point is to make an appointment and discuss these Migraines with your husband's doctor. Specific recommendation for him should come from a doctor who can review his and his family's medical history, discuss his symptoms with him, and conduct a complete examination. That just can't be done via the Internet.
Please let me know how things to and how he's doing?
Welcome again,
Teri
Thanks for your quick reply, Pia. We can hope that this turns out to be a treatable and not very serious issue. He really needs to see a doctor as soon as possible. There is a rare form of headache that wakes people from sleep. If you want to read a bit about it, check out Hypnic Headache - The Basics. Of course, nobody can say via the Internet what his headaches are, but it can't hurt to do a bit of reading about possibilities.
Another option, if he can't get a quick appointment, would be to go to the emergency room.
Please keep me posted?
Teri
