Q: Does anyone know an affordable migraine doctor near Sayreville, NJ?

I need a doctor who understands chronic migraines and is willing to prescribe several different types of abortive medications from triptans to small amount of narcotics as well as try out various preventatives to find one that works.  I get 4-5 bad migraines a week and have burnt out the triptans; can only take once a week or just not effective.  Desperate to find something that works! Please help.  New to this site.  Been to many doctors and wasted money.  Don't have it to waste anymore.

ChronicMigraineur,

We really have no way of knowing what doctors charge, so it's impossible for us to recommend based on them being "affordable." We do maintain a listing of Migraine and headache specialists who have been recommended by patients. Take a look at Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

One comment- You said you need someone "willing to prescribe several different types of abortive medications from triptans to small amount of narcotics..." Narcotics cannot abort a Migraine. All they can do is mask the pain for a few hours during which, hopefully, the Migraine runs its course and ends. Here's an article that will be helpful, Preventive, Abortive, and Rescue Medications - What's the Difference?

Welcome again,
Teri

Thanks for the quick reply.  I checked that list and the one doctor listed in New Jersey moved to Arizona, so I was wondering if anyone on this site had any luck with one in New Jersey.  I read about the Jefferson Center and will be calling them on Monday, but I heard there is a waiting list, idk how long.  I am still learning the proper names for things, but basically need a doctor that understands that one or two meds aren't going to cut it!  As for affordable, I spent $750 for Dr. Sarno to basically tell me it was all in my head (no pun intended!) and we all know how well that works! So affordable to me is like $75-125 per visit, I guess.

You're welcome. I'm not good enough at geography to know who's closest to you, but you might also want to take a look at doctors in New York.

At the Jefferson, how long the wait is depends partly on which doctor you ask to see. I know Dr. Young has a pretty long wait right now, but I don't know about Dr. Silberstein, Dr. Nahas, or Dr. Marmura. They're all great.

Honestly, I don't know of a single specialist whose first visit won't be higher than $125. Not sure about the cost after the first visit.

Keep me posted? I'd love to keep track of how you're doing.

Hi - thanks for replying.  I have an appointment now with Dr. Silberstein for Feb 1st, which was the first available.  I was hoping to find someone in NJ close by me in the interim, but I guess for now, that's not an option.  As for NY, Manhattan is the closest to me, and I have already been to the Headache Institute at St. Lukes.  I don't have health insurance so I don't have the luxury of trying out different doctors without result.  I will just hang in there until February.  Thanks for your support.
