Q: How Soon Does Food Trigger a Migraine

Most of my migraines occur in the middle of the night.  How can I tell if it is something that I ate or drank that day that caused it?  Can food triggers cause a migraine 12-18 hours after you consume them ?

If foods are triggers, they can trigger a Migraine for up to 48 hours after you eat them.

One of the best tools for identifying triggers is a good Migraine diary. You can download a free diary workbook from our article Your Migraine and Headache Diary. Some of us have food triggers; some of us don't. An elimination diet is the best way to determine if you have food triggers. For more information and a workbook on this, see Managing Migraine - Migraine Trigger Foods.

Hope this helps!
