Weebee,

The potential side effects of Topamax can be really frightening. One thing to remember is that they're POTENTIAL side effects. You won't necessarily experience them.

Have you discussed your concerns with your doctor? How many other medications have you tried for Migraine prevention? There are over 100 medications in use for Migraine prevention now. If you'd like to see a list of them, see Migraine preventive medications - too many options to give up!

Your doctor should be willing to discuss the options available to you and make a choice of medications WITH you. If not, it's time for a new doctor, maybe a Migraine specialist. It’s important to note that neurologists aren’t necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

Keep us posted?

Welcome again,

Teri

I have suffered with migraine most of my life, now about 30 years.  Been on all the medications, with nothing the works.  I have taken Topomax and experienced the side effects - slurred speech, concentration problems, reduction in weight, inability to communicate, difficulty communicating professionally.  Topomax interferred with my every day life and had a huge impact at work.

Everyone has their own experiences with migraine medication and no two people have the same symptoms simultaneously.  If you follow the directions correctly while taking Topomax and experience side effects, tell your doctor right away.  If the side effects impact your lifestyle, your doctor may say 'would you rather have the migraine or the side effects?'.  At least that is what one doctor asked me.  I told him I did not want side effects that were going to make me feel, look, or act stupid.  I told him I would rather continue to managing the migraine without the serious effects than to have the inability to communicate with people or to have the inability to think.

Every migraine medication has side effects.  It's up to you to decide if you want to live your life with them or find another solution.  My recommendation is to see how Topomax works for you.  You may not receive the same side effects as severe as I had, but if you do and you believe it is interferring with your life, then you should certainly consult with your physician.  There are alternative medications - other than Topomax - that could help.

Good luck.
