Thursday, May 21, 2009 Margaret, Edinburgh asks

Q: Total "blank" spells of up to 8 hours, memory loss, aphasia, seizures - diagnosis atypical migraine?

Does anyone out there suffer from -or have an explanation for -  the total "blank" spells that I get where I can "lose" up to 8 hours - I am not necessarily unconscious but I am aphasic, numerically muddled etc and I remember nothing about it. Seizures have been involved but they are now under control with Topirimate 100m b.d.Epilepsy has definitely been ruled out. It has definitely been diagonosed as atypical migraine but my neurologist, who is lovely, has been unable to help me any further. It is very debilitating and frightening, as I live alone, I have to have a circle of friends who constantly check on me to make sure I haven't collapsed etc. Any extra help and info towards understanding what is happening would be wonderful. Also information on Migraine specialists in the Edinburgh area in Scotland would be an incredible help.

Hi Margaret,

One of the most important things is to get an accurate diagnosis and it sounds like you are on the right track by trying to do so. unfortunately we don't have any Migraine specialists listed in Edinburgh. There are some in London and you may want to call them to see if they can give you any recommendations for a Migraine specialist near you. Many times these experts know other doctors who live in different areas and they are happy to refer people.

The best thing to do is get in touch with one of these specialists. I did find a Migraine specialist on the Migrainetrust site, but I don't know anything about him/her. Here is the link for you: Edinburgh specialist.

I hope this helps.

Hi Nancy,

Thank you for taking the time to reply to me. Unfortunately the Edinburgh clinic listed on the Migraine Trust web site no longer exists!! - I had already investigated that one and had been told that the doctor who ran it had moved away. So I have hit a bit of a brick wall there. I am going to try asking my GP to refer me to the Homeopathic hospital in Glasgow, which is about 40 miles from Edinburgh, as I understand they have an excellent headache clinic and the National Health service will refer patients there, although the waiting time for an appointment is about 3 months. Thank you again for trying to help.

Cheers Margaret
