Q: I have taken Imitrex injections for years but this last time it didn't take migraine away. Why didn't it work?

My main triggers are: sleep deprivation, getting overheated like from overdoing exercise or working outdoors in the heat; toxic odors like from lotions/body sprays, house cleaning products. I had migraine the week before and then again the next week. I woke up with it, took injection and waited in bed for it to go away. It subsided but pain still there. I drank coffee, took Migraine formula Excedrin and pain went away but I didn't feel well all day. I noticed that I don't recuperate quickly like I used to after injecting. It takes me all day to recover.

Gloria,

No medication works every time. The Imitrex may work the next time you use it. Another possibility is that Imitrex is losing its effectiveness for you. That can happen. There are seven medications in the triptan family-- Imitrex, Maxalt, Zomig, Amerge, Relpax, Axert, and Frova -- as well as Treximet, which is a combination of Imitrex and Naproxen Sodium. Each of the triptans binds to different combinations of serotonin receptors, which is why our bodies may respond differently to each of them. It's well worth discussing the ones you haven't tried with your doctor.

Hope this helps!
Teri
