Q: Has anyone been treated by Dr John S LaWall M.D. at University Physicians Healthcare in Tucson?

I had ocasional migraines (two or three a year) for ten years or so but on June 21 ,2007 this one started out of the bluen no aura , no numbing in the hand ,arm or face no slurred speech, just the sharp crushings pain.  No illness, no trama, no stress, nothing.

Chiroprator would help for ten to fifteen minutes. He got xrays of tailbone to top of head and cat scan of mid back to top of head all w/in normal limits. went to firt neurologist got MRI w and w/out die and two lumbar punctures one w/opening pressure all w/in normal limitsHer treatment keep increasing the morphine to break the pain cycle.  Didn't do anything but make me not care about anything. I could not live that way

Switched to Dr LaWall.  Tried many things all kinds of blood work heavy metals, toxins, molds, alergins, hormones.  We have tracked everything that has entered my body for months at a time. cut out caffee for 30 days cut out milk and all dairy for 30 days cut off all beef for thirty days cut out all articicial sweetners for 39 days nothing has had any impactPlayed with lots of the different drug therapies without much success except verrapamil did drive my heart rate down to 38 beats per minutes for about three minutes while I was in th ERNeedless to say the ER staff went into overdrive for a bit.

Tried steriods nortriptorlene lapimital imitrex and opcipital nerve block.  The nerve block worked to lower the pain level to the 4 to 5 range for almost 5 days

Ed,

-:¦:-•:*'""*:•.-:¦:-•*Welcome to MyMigraineConnection!*•-:¦:-•:*'""*:•.-:¦:-

I can't help you with information about Dr. LaWall. I'd never heard of him until you posted this question. I checked the databases of Migraine specialists from the American Headache Society and the National Headache Foundation, and he's not listed in either of them.

You mentioned one doctor increasing morphine. How many days a week were you taking it? If we take Migraine abortive meds such as triptans or any kind of pain med more than two days a week, a big part of your problem may well be medication overuse headache (MOH), aka rebound. See Medication Overuse Headache - When the Remedy Backfires for more information on this.

Let me get this straight... You had a Migraine start on a specific date in 2007, and it hasn't stopped? Nobody can diagnose you via the Internet, but the question can be raised of if this IS a Migraine. When someone can give the exact date as you can, New Daily Persistent Headache is something to consider and rule out. You can read more about it in New Daily Persistent Headache - The Basics.

Seeing a Migraine and headache specialist is the best suggestion I have for you. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

Please keep me posted on how you're doing?

Welcome again,

Teri

Teri,

First neurologist I was seeing had me on morphine every six hours and up the dosage four times even chewed me out for trying take them only as needed. Her intention was to "brake the pain cycle". Never got rid of the pain, just made me not care about hurting or anything else.  First thing Dr Lawall had me do was through the morphine away.  Not a fun time after being on it for 24/7 for 4 months.  Now I use the hydromorphone when the pain reaches a level of 8 and it usually takes 4 or 5 over 16 to 20 hours to keep the pain down at the normal 6 to 7 level.  This is usually 2 or 3 times a week.  Haven't had a full day below 5 in 6 months or more.

First thought in the morning before I move is how bad is it going to be.

Been searching the internet, doesn't look like there is anyone here in Tucson listed s a specialist in headaches/migraines.  So, I guess I will need to make a trip to Phoenix.

Ed,

Glad you're continuing to look for relief and management. It really CAN be done.

There just aren't enough Migraine specialists. When I first needed one, I ended up driving eight ours each direction to see one in Philadelphia.

Please keep me posted on how you're doing?

if you are still having problems, try a chiropractor who uses "atlas orthogonal" technique.  it got my wife off her migraine meds, which weren't working anyway, that she had been on forever.  she suffered with migraines pretty much daily, only eased after vomiting and passing out.  this atlas orthogonal did wonders for her, she is off meds and rarely gets a migraine, and not nearly as severe as in past.  good luck.

I have been going to Dr. LaWall for a while.  He is definitely a specialist in migraines (teaches at the University as well)...  I have seen MANY neurologists and he is by far the best.  We worked together for months tweaking meds, logging my headaches, looking for trends...  He is extremely conscientious... and the only doctor I've ever seen that insists his patients don't wait for hours on end in the waiting room.  I was able to get my migraines reduced to about 30% of my days using topamax and atenolol.  I'm trying to get pregnant now and had to get off both meds as a result, but it definitely helped (not to mention the bonus side effect of weight loss from the topamax)...

In either case, good luck.  I understand how you feel and there's not too many people that really understand how painful a disease this is.
