Q: the "mini pill" vs implant vs iud vs nuvaring

I am considering switching birth controls because in my research I have learned the Levlen is not a good one for people with Migraines. I am wondering what peoples experiences have been with different types of BCs have been. I am mainly interested in the mini pill because I am very responsible about taking my pill every day on time. I would be interested in the implant as well, but understand that is a long term thing although it can be removed if you decide you want it to be. My boyfriend thinks I should look into Mirena (IUD), but I don't think this would be the right option for me, first, I have not had any children. I had an ectopic pregnancy at 18 that was in my right ovary and I am pretty sure that that makes me ineligable anyway. I am also worried about all the horrible things that can happen to people from the IUD that are more risky because you haven't had kids before. So, for me that one is kind of out... The nuva ring kind of just grosses me out. Plus the idea of any possibilty of TSS is very scary because my mother got very sick when she was younger and almost died from it. I guess I just want to hear people's experiences and see what people think. I am also taking Topamax and considering getting off of it. I have been feeling anxious and strange since being on it, I can't sleep, can't concentrate, have crappy memory, plus still having some cloudy urine on and off and the drs office has not seemed very concerned at all. Not sure how to feel about it. Seems to get better when I drink extra water. Thanks all for your comments and advice!

Maggie,

The choice of birth control methods is very personal. I used oral contraceptives for years, then switched to a diaphragm. Any form of hormonal birth control can impact Migraines. It certainly couldn't hurt to discuss this with the doctor who treats your Migraines.

Speaking of the doctor who treats your Migraines, what did he say about the issue of cloudy urine and Topamax? That's something that really needs to be answered because of the increassed risk of kidney stones when taking Topamax.

Hi. I had the same problem, i have benn first on the pill, then, becouse I have High blood pressure and Migranes and strong family history of strokes i switched to IUD (I have 2 children) wich gave me iron defficiency anemia. I took it out and switched to minipill, but still, I worried about my risk factors. About a year ago I started to use VCF (Vaginal Contraceptiv Film) its over-the-counter spermicide and I am very happy with it. I used by itself and it did not fail me.
