Q: Do my Pets have anything to do with my migraine and headaches

Hi

I have suffered from migraines since I was 11 and developed a cronic tension headache in 1993.  I have always thought that I would have to live with these, and this year I decided to do some research.  The thing that has been consistant in my life whilst I have had these headaches is pets.  We have always had a family dog when I lived with Parents from the age of 10, and once I left home, and married I got two dogs again in the year of 1993.  Now we have 3 cats, and a guinea pig.

Am I allergic to the cats, and are they causing my tension headaches?  I have booked myself in at the doctors to see if I can get an allergy test done, and have also got an appointment at the Pain clinic in York at the end of next week.

Thanks

Hi Sharraie,

Migraine is a genetic neurolgic condition thought to be caused by overactive neurons in our brains and our genetics. Migraine attacks can be triggered by many things such as changes in the weather, dehydration, certain foods like chocolate and even sleeping too much or too little. According to the American Headache Society people with allergic rhinitis (allergies) may be 10 times more likely to have Migraines.

Have you ever kept a Migraine diary to see what triggers you may really have? Maybe it isn't the animals at all. Your Migraine triggers could be dehydration, chocolate even changes in the weather. We have more information on our Migraine trigger page HERE.
