Q: Can menstrual migraines be permanently erased by some surgery or treatment? I'm desparate.

Every month for 10 years is enough. Topamax doesn't work as a preventative. The abortives Zomig and Imitrex work, but I have to take repeat doses and this makes me queasy and sometimes makes my chest feel warm and my legs rubbery. I started getting them after the birth of the third of my four children (all daughters). Certain foods exacerbate it such as pop, cheese chocolate etc... (aspartame will cause almost immediate symptoms), but usually it is "old faithful", every month right before my periods. I am in misery. I don't have auras and light is less tolerable than sound, but the queasiness is unbearable with vomiting. Sometimes I don't eat for 2 days.

Hi V.P.

Menstrual Migraines are very troublesome for some women, myself included. Hormonal fluctuations can be a Migraine trigger for some women. Surgery is an invasive procedure that may or may not work to reduce your Migraine frequecncy. To have this surgery (hsterectomy) for Migraine reduction is not a good idea. There is no "cure" for Migraine disease, and any doctor who suggests having this is not being responsible.  We have some information on hormones and Migraine disease below:

Migraine Disease, Menstrual Migraines, and Hysterectomy

Ask the Clinician questions:  Role of hormones in causing Migraines?

Hysterectomy as a cure for menstrually triggered Migraines?

One other thing I'd like to mention - if we take certain prescription and/or OTC medications more than two to three days a week we run the risk of Medication Overuse Headache, MOH. While we have MOH, no preventive on earth, like topamx will work.  Continue reading this article for more information: Medication Overuse Headache - When the Remedy Backfires.

Good luck

Nancy

I finally tried a course of acupuncture.  Worked beautifully for me. No more big headaches, sometimes a nagging little one that 800 mg of ibu will fix. Try it.
